"Every student (child) deserves to be treated as a potential genius." Anton Ehrenzweig
Mentorship Programs

Give a Hand. Give Hope.

Become a Mentor!
A mentor is defined in the dictionary as a wise and trusted counselor or teacher. Mentoring is an act that gives hope and reason to pursue a brighter future. It is a relationship that brings care and confidence to the young, the vulnerable and the inexperienced. It is the guidance given by the experienced, caring and responsible person. Mentoring is the act that helps the young discover the potential and talents they are endowed with -That potential and talent that makes our world a better place.

"Many people walk in and out of your life, But only true friends will leave their footprints in your heart...Learn from the mistakes of others, You can't leave long enough to make them all yourself...Yesterday is history, Tomorrow is mystery, Today is a gift" - Eleanor Roosevelt

"A mentor can enable you to see a higher goal of freedom for yourself spiritually, mentally, emotionally, relationally, in persistence and inconfidence, in creativity, and in a magnitude of other facets that make up your dream purpose-life" Larry Di Angi, author, Magic is in the extra mile

To Mentors - Mentors don't just mentor but also learn and benefit in the process. Proteges come with something unique, talents, abilities, information or things that will never have occured to you...things that may help you realize your dream purpose too. Similar to the princip of as you give, so you shall receive.

Types of Mentoring

Education Mentoring
Mentors guide students and the youth to professions and careers they aspire. This can take a few hours to days depending on the extent of need and confidence of both protégé and mentor.

Youth Mentoring
This entails mentorship for youth who wants a caring and responsible adult in their lives. Someone inspiring, lifting and guiding to the young person is often a sought mentor. Mentors can be related or unrelated to the young person.

Minnesota Mentor-Protege
Majority of the East African immigrant students currently in colleges, universities and high schools in Minnesota obtained their early education in Northern Kenya, in resource limited environment in refugee camps. When they resettle in the United States, these students are placed in grade levels based on age and not education level. These puts them at a huge disadvangate despite their resilient efforts and ostensible dreams to attain higher education and careers. We find many of the students struggling in making career choices. They spend a long time in college some up to 8 years, due to frequent challenges rooted in the lack of early exposure to professional role models within families or community. The lack of good counseling programs in the schools they attend appears to worsen the situation. This is also in part due to gaps in the education system that does not recognize or deleberately and comprehensively fail to address the needs of immigrant communities. The GCG has implemented Mentorship programs to catch these students in their early college years and puts them on track to careers and ensure completion within prescribed degree times.
Generation for Change has expanded its Mentorship program to students across the state of Minnesota. We are seeing thousands of students underserved in our public schools and colleges. Success in Education is pegged on interaction with role model. The agency started the Minneapolis area mentorship in light of experiences gained from mentorship project in Kenya's North Eastern Province schools. This service has since expanded the rest of the state.
The goal of the Mentor/Tutor Program is to show and give students real reason for succeeding in their educational careers. The program is designed in a way that students and adults have the opportunity to experience the success of tutoring and/or mentoring.
Currently, the focus is on Health care professions. If you or someone you know is interested in Careers in Health care, you have found a powerful tool to help you succeed. Generation for Change will guide you through how to become a Physician, a Pharmacist, a Dentist, a Nurse and many other professions within Health care. The expectation is that the protege will in turn become a mentor and in the long run become a contributing and valuable member of their local communities and the larger American society.
Testimonials below from mentee students;
“By shadowing a pharmacist, I got a clear picture of what a career in pharmacy is like. I am more confident than ever that I can be a pharmacist” Gibril, Chem/biology major from University of Minnesota
“Great program. I learnt a lot. In looking at how Docs read 3D/4D Brain images, I was surprised how easy they looked from real life perspective. I felt so confident and the ringing message for me was – this is certainly do-able. Overall, the encounter was very informal and we discussed a variety of things from premedical, to cost of medical school, to academic preparation and practice in medical school. I truly appreciated Dr. Yock’s commitment to making the opportunity of prospecting medical school very real. Also, my thanks goes to the Generation for Change (GCG) who made this possible for me and many other students.” Abdinasir, Microbiology major and Premedical student – University of Minnesota

"As a pre-pharmacy student, i was fortunate to shadow Dr. Ali. He gave me more insight about what pharmacists do and gave me the confidence to continue pursuing my dream to become a pharmacist. Not only did i get to learn more about the pharmacy profession but i specifically learned about clinical pharmacy". Fartun, pre-pharm/chemical engineering student
